Let's Have a Moment

One can not help but be a bit reflective and in awe that we are on the last of the last of our Junior High Careers together.
So many of you have gain momentum and I am hoping that it carries you right into your exam. Work hard and expect a little stress. It means your are ready!

Math & Science

Good work on the practice PATs this week...

Remember, you can work at home on them.  Go to the HDC webpage then to school information then down to grade 9 information.

Thursday is LOCKER CLEAN OUT DAY...please plan to take tomorrow as well as on Thursday.  Coordinate a ride if you need...if you have that much stuff to take home!!!  :)

You should have a copy of 10.2 and 10.3 to finish up Circle Geometry.  I will post on D2L if you need.  I will also put on the SMART files notes (remember to go through Cougar Community scroll down to May/March 2012 to figure how to open the file at home).  I will also post the Math review.

You will need to start to make a ziploc bag of supplies (pencils, eraser, calculator....no phones allowed) for next week.

Hope you are finding a balance this weekend between having some fun & putting some time into studying.

We will also do a quick little lab on acids & bases tomorrow.

I hope that your trifold building is going well!  If you have any questions make sure you are asking.  Keep in mind that we will be having a Wednesday AFTER SCHOOL trifold build where many teachers will available to help.  I suggest that you make arrangements to stay if you are not 90% complete by Wednesday in class.

For our Poetry Unit, we will be handing in our booklets on Wednesday, June 8th, 2016. Your found poetry is due today.
You should have the whole bookelte completed and presented in class your chosen poem from the whiteboard. 
Your Pun is also due!
We will have little chunks of time to present if you missed earlier chances.  Be Bold and Advocate! This is the last current marks of your Grade 9 career.

Tomorrow is June 1st

So much is going on as we fast approach the end of the school year!

In Humanities we are currently completing our Utopia Society this week.  We will begin our in class individual responses next week and our tri-fold build.  This weekend will be very important in getting all the sections organized and making sure the MRP of each section has all the tidbits needed.
June 7, 8 and 9th will be the in class time to prepare for presentation, trifold build and last minute touch ups.

Also in Humanities we have been completing our Poetry Booklet. I look forward to hearing your Puns and moving into how you use your voice to interpret the poem of your choosing from our class anthology. Tomorrow JUNE 1st the following items need to be handed in:

1.Vocabulary 2.Author Motivation 3. Imagery 4.Comprehension

On Thursday we will be marking the Comprehension and you will work on the Tone/Mood and Voice. You will have till Friday to complete your PUN.

Also remember that your service hours are due on the 10th of June.  You are accountable for 5 hours in the school and 5 hours in the community.

Today we worked on the map for Utopia.  Groups were given grid paper & graphing expectations.  We started a River City case scenario...this will be due on Thursday...one assignment per group.  Tonight you should be working through the viewpoints/opinions & mulling over the economic & political policy changes piece on the last page.

What a busy week followed by yet another busy week!

Today we watched Cowspiracy.  I will attach the link to youtube if you want to watch some of it this week.  There are some interesting issues raised that might help you with your Enviro Policy planning for Utopia.  We will pass on the source analysis but I will post the assignment in D2L in case you want to mull it over.

We will do the mini-unit for the Utopia map on Monday as well as do a River City case study.

This needs to be a big study/Utopia weekend.  Please keep pushing forward in your groups and moving the project forward.  If you are booked to study this weekend, do your best to stick on schedule.

Remember to bring everything that you need for your Utopia build time on Monday/Tuesday.

Science exam is tomorrow...50 m/c, 4 numerical response, PBA.  You will have one period for the multiple choice and one period for the PBA & numerical response.

When you are finished tomorrow, you can organize & pep up your Science journal or work quietly on Utopia planning.

Utopia launch today...we are so excited to hear all about your project plans!!!  It was amazing to overhear even just the beginning snippets of your conversations!!

Our focus was Math today...algebra word problems.  We worked on age, coin, distance/speed/time, number & geometric examples.  Students received a package of practice questions to work through to prep for their exam on Tuesday.

I will post an answer key to the word problems this weekend on D2L.

Review materials for Science were handed out today for students to work through for their exam prep for May 18th.

Triathlon is tomorrow...please pack up everything that you need & meet on the stage in the morning.

Today we started topic 7 in Science...lots of hints for Utopia launch tomorrow!!!

We worked on 8.3 & 8.4 and have started word problems.  Please work through as many word problems as possible in 8.3 and 8.4 tonight.  I have a set of problems to start tomorrow...

Math exam is Tuesday May 17th...8 multiple choice & 6 word problems.

Science exam is Wednesday May 18th...practice quiz given today...review will be handed out tomorrow.

Moving forward...

Hi Everybody,

Today, we worked on study calendars, math mid-year refresher & finishing the Topic 6 online simulations.

Tomorrow is the track meet.  To accommodate for this, we compiled a list of tasks to push our course work through the weekend.

Here are things that need to be worked on:

1.  Science Topic 4 jot notes...please get these done if they are not already done so

2.  Topic 6 Science online simulations...please finish this assignment using the links on our blog

3.  Look ahead into 8.3 in Math so you can see where the algebra is going on Monday...Algebra Unit Exam will be next week on May 16th.

4.  Study prep for your Science Electricity final assessment on May 17th (may switch to May 18th but plan for the 17th)

5.  Create a study schedule!!  Today, students received a May & June calendar with school events listed on it.

a) please add family/extra-curricular events to the calendar (ensure that the timing is reasonable ie if soccer is for 2 hours...it is actually a 4 hour event by the time you travel, eat, shower etc)

b) next add your homework time

c) next add your study time to the calendar...what time are you going to study, how long and what will you be studying (ex:  20 minutes Topic 2 Biodiversity narrow vs broad niche organisms)

d) please share your study plan with your adults at home

6. Tighten up your labs (Resistance Roadblock & Series/Parallel)...these should be in your journal when I start to collect them in)

7. Organize your journals!!!!!  Sort through all your loose papers and get them filed into the appropriate journal/binder.

8.  p. 307 Topic 5 Review Portable Power complete #2, 3, 4

9.  p. 308 Topics 4-6 Wrap Up...please complete #4 & 7

10.  Work through your mid year refresher in Math!

Field trip to MRU tomorrow.  Meet on stage...do not go to homeroom in the morning please.  We will leave directly after homeroom so please don't be late!!  Thanks.

Today we reviewed the Algebra check ins from Friday.  Students have corrected their work & seen their marks.

In Science, we did a quick review of topic 4...the vast majority of students did not complete their notes for this section so please get this finished asap.  We also introduced the theory for topic 5 on electrochemical cells.

Science Unit Assessment is May 17th.

Double period in the computer lab on Wednesday for Science....you will be working through Topic 6 theory.

All sailors will write their Science assessment tomorrow after school.

Trip 2 Sailors will write their Math assessment on Thursday after school.

On Friday we reviewed reasoning type questions for multiplying/dividing polynomials.  There is a Math check in on Monday covering multiplying/dividing monomials (algebraically/modeling/reasoning) and multiplying monomials by polynomials (algebraically/modeling/reasoning).  The units in the textbook are 7.1 and 7.2 which are both posted on D2L.  Remember to check your work as you are doing practice questions.

Please read through Topic 2 Electricity especially the Investigation on Measuring Current & Voltage.  Please create the data tables & get the diagrams into your journal.  Ensure that you space things in your journal so you can complete the lab & analysis questions right in your journal.  Thanks.

Today we went over the Adding/Subtracting Polynomials Take 2 assessment.  We then introduced multiplying monomials algebraically and using algebra tiles.

Today we did an investigation on Static Electricity.  Please ensure that your analysis/interpretation questions are ready to be handed in tomorrow.  Remember, you will have 10 minutes to work on your responses tomorrow in class.

Another review of adding polynomials & collecting like terms today.  We also introduced the concept of polynomial subtraction.

Today we went over the Chemistry Unit Exam & Performance Based Assessments.  We had a mini-tutorial on balancing chemical reactions.

-ensure that all naming/formulae worksheets are completed (these needed to be done early last week)

Please go back over your topics 1-3 assessment that was handed back & make sure that you can understand each question thoroughly now that you have had a few weeks of Chem since you wrote it.

Let's Seize February

We may only have 14 days of learning left in February but make no mistake we are covering lots of ground!  Make sure you are using all your time wisely in class so you have no homework. I see and recognize many of you that have put it into high gear. Do not be stagnant, work extra hard and then reap the benefits. This is your time to get ahead because 2nd semester will fly by. That almost feels like a fortune from a cookie.

There is a Math check in tomorrow on Exponent Laws & BEDMAS.  You will not be able to use your Exponent Law flashcards!!

Homework from today is p. 112 #11-16.

You can be working on Khan Academy at home with your login info from Mrs. Wensley.

Exponents Unit Exam will be on Tuesday.

You will be working on an intro to the Periodic Table tomorrow.

Thursday is the Churchill tour...please ensure that your paperwork is in to Mrs. Boucher.

You will have some time on Thursday to work on Khan Academy during the collapsed classes.

Estimation check in again tomorrow.  We did some serious remediation work today!

Element project needs to be done for Monday please.  Must be aesthetically pleasing, factual, & citations must be done properly...

Really Smart Dead Guys needs to be finished & fantastic for Monday!  The pay off will be next year so buckle down & but some detail & time into this please.

I will post some textbook work to keep Exponents rolling through the long weekend etc.

Hope you had a great day at SAIT.

Today we did an estimation check in & we need to go back to the drawing board.  We will have a mini-lesson tomorrow & I will give you another check in on Thursday.

Remember tomorrow you have one period with technology to do what you need to do for your element project.  Please use www.citationmachine.net for your references.  Remember to use APA format & input info into the manual mode.

Atomic History sheet should be done for tomorrow.  It needs to be done well...this will save you time & energy next year!!!  By Monday at the absolute latest...

High school tour paperwork needs to be returned immediately.  904 is still missing many forms!!!

Hope the day went well for all of you...

For those of you heading to SAIT, enjoy your day tomorrow.  I hope you have your paperwork all taken care of.

Remember that your Atomic History (Really Smart Dead Guys) sheet is due for Wednesday.  I know this is not the most exciting part of the course but it is really important to know this as all the high schools are spending a ton of time on it.  Best to keep a half step ahead!!!

You will have a computer class on Wednesday to finish up the element project, print, send emails to print in colour etc.  If it gets done this week great...if we don't build the table until next week, let's not worry too much.

It will be a 903/904 blend tomorrow.  I am hoping to give a Estimation Check In.

If you did not finish in class you need to complete the simile and metaphor assignment for the short story Gore by Sarah Ellis.
Find as many similes and metaphors as you can in the story. Select two, one of each type that you feel are particularly effective and explain the reason for your choice.

Sorry we didn't finish our conferences today...with the single drop & the reading presentation running over time we were down to only 25 full minutes of class time.  We will finish these on Monday.

What a great presentation today!!  Please share this very valuable information with your adults!

Great work today in class on our intro to Chem mini-activities.  Please get as much done tonight to get you to a point that you can enter into our classifying lab tomorrow in an intelligent way.  There are 9 tasks on your list...up to and including #7 would be great but if time is tight tonight, make sure you are ok with mixtures and pure substances.

We started personal conferences today & marks printouts were handed out to some students.  These conferences were cut short by our presentation.
